Or Aunt Care's Guide to Goldens or The Golden Rule Book or the Golden Gazette or any number of other names.
I want everyone to read this
great description of Goldens written by Laurie Leach. It is from the Laughing Dog Press, a greatly lamented former website of Laurie's who has also written a book on agility.
Clearly Laurie has been introduced to the Golden, but she has not become a Golden person. In other words she has been brainwashed by a Golden, but is not blissfully aware of this fact. Look at what she did while babysitting the Goldens, she sat outside with them while they played, she took them for walks, she cuddled on the couch with them, she played endless games of ball with them and retrieved the ball at their request. They were doing anything she wanted to do? Sounds like she was doing what THEY wanted her to do. Those of us who are aware Golden people know that we do what our pups want us to do. They are the ones with the thoughts and plans, we are the ones who do them willingly do them. Really, if we were acting out of our free will would we be walking them and throwing balls for them all the time? But we like it that way. We are the willing servant of our Goldens, not the other way around.
I am also a little disappointed that Laurie, who by all appearances was a geek in high school, did not appreciate the fact that Goldens play the oldest geek trick in the book. If everyone thinks you are the "Good Kid," you get all the freedom you want. If you are involved in Model UN, the Quiz Bowl team, National Honors Society, etc., you can skip classes anytime you want. Your teachers believe you when you tell them you were at one of those activities. Goldens do this all the time, they are typically the "Good Dog" in a group, so they get to do what they want. Usually it is nothing bad, since they really are the "Good Dog," but they typically get to be off-leash since they generally stick around and come when called, they get lots of treats since they do what they are asked, they get to go everywhere with their humans since they are well behaved, they can get their humans to do what they want (see previous pph) since they are such good dogs. What is the downside in this scenario for the Golden? The only one I can see is that they can't bite their humans when their humans do something stupid like making them wear stupid outfits like booties.
